Como Property Steward

Would you like to spend your Thursday's  surrounded by beautiful heritage gardens while helping care for one of Victoria's most treasured historic homes and it's garden?

As a Volunteer Property Steward at Como House and Gardens, you'll join a friendly team of up to four volunteers dedicated to preserving and enhancing this remarkable National Trust property. Working alongside staff and fellow volunteers, you'll contribute to the care of the property's gardens, historic buildings and visitor spaces through practical conservation, landscaping and basic maintenance activities.

This is a hands-on and rewarding opportunity for people who enjoy working outdoors, using their practical skills, and seeing the results of their efforts firsthand. Whether you're handy with tools, have gardening experience, or simply enjoy caring for beautiful places, you'll be helping ensure Como remains welcoming, safe and inspiring for visitors to enjoy.

Volunteer activities could include: 

  • Repairs to fencing and garden edging
  • Pressure washing and oiling exterior structures  
  • Cleaning windiws and exterior light fittings
  • Carry out garden maintenance and development tasks.  
  • Work co-operatively with other volunteers to keep the property neat tidy and safe

Knowledge and Skills required :  

  • Experience is not always necessary 
  • Physically capable of undertaking practical outdoor tasks
  • Ability to follow instructions and work safely with minimal supervision when required
  • Some knowledge and enjoyment of routine gardening and landscape practices and builidng maintenance is desirable but not essential.  
  • Willingness to adapt procedures to ensure maintenance of heritage aspects of property considered
  • Positive work ethic appreciated

Training and skill development in: 

  • National Trust general induction for all volunteers. 
  • Site Induction by NTV Staff 

You will be one of a team of experienced volunteers. The National Trust is a not for profit organisation that aims to conserve Australia’s history and heritage for present and future generations. 

As part of the application process, we will ask you to agree to register as a National Trust Volunteer.  Volunteers are required to have a current Working with Children’s Card (free for volunteers) and police check which you can apply for as part of the application process.
