THIS ROLE IS SUITABLE FOR FAMILY VOLUNTEERING

Family volunteering roles are open to people under the age of 18 who are accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian whilst undertaking the role.  All parties become volunteers and must undergo the corporate volunteer services induction and on-site induction.

Activities of City of Adelaide’s (CoA) Volunteer Program contribute to delivery of the CoA 2020-2024 Strategic Plan.

Volunteering is highly valued in the CoA with volunteer activities contributing significantly to the positive experiences of residents, businesses, visitors, and students.

Brief description of the role

Improve the natural environment of the Adelaide Park Lands by taking part in working bees and educational activities in the Wirrarninthi area (Park 23).

Tasks

 

  • Weed identification and management
  • Planting of local native plants
  • Flora and fauna monitoring
  • Native fauna habitat provision
  • Environmental monitoring e.g. water quality

The tasks will also include reporting to the Park Lands Ranger any hazards such as:

  • location of any syringes/ associated materials
  • overhanging branches
  • European wasps/beehives

Essential

  • Ability to work as part of a team with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Willingness to learn
  • Able to perform the inherent physical requirements of the role

Desirable

  • Basic gardening skills, plant and animal identification

Training, induction and time commitment                                             

 Training & Induction 

All volunteers must participate in the City of Adelaide’s:

  • Volunteer generic induction
  • Site specific induction (inclusive of manual handling training and operating procedures where necessary)
  • Completion of the online Workplace Health and Safety module
  • Attend training provided by the Volunteer Supervisor to maintain or develop skills relevant to the role

Time Commitment

Volunteers are asked to commit to a session once per month (usually the first Saturday of each month) between 9.00 – 11.30am with additional sessions as required.

All bushland volunteers will be invited to the occasional BBQ to celebrate the work undertaken.

Additional requirements                                                                                                        

  • All council volunteers are required to have a satisfactory current National Criminal History Clearance and Working with Children Check. This will be provided and updated every 5 years by CoA
  • Comply with all Council policies and procedures outlined in the Volunteer Handbook
  • Adhere to all Work Health and Safety instructions and advice provided
  • Where required, uniforms and personal protective equipment will be provided by CoA to be worn whilst on duty
  • Volunteers under 18 years of age must be supervised by a responsible adult for the duration of their volunteer shifts. The supervising adult may be a CoA staff member, or a staff-nominated fellow volunteer.

  • Membership with the City of Adelaide Social Club (a fee applies)
  • A voucher for selected Council UPark’s during volunteer shift when public transport is not a suitable option
  • Reimbursement of pre-approved work related telephone and travel costs where appropriate
