In Patient Unit ("IPU") Mealtime Volunteer
Hours: 12.15pm to 14.00pm or 17.15pm to 19.00pm (daily)
Summary of role
Our In Patient Unit volunteers provide an essential meal time service to our patients on the In Patient Unit (“IPU”).
Principle duties
- Report to reception at beginning of shift to sign in, sign out at the end of the shift.
- Wear name badge at all times
- At the beginning of the shift receive a handover from the relevant clinician BEFORE entering any patient room.
- Understand the written menu selection and ensure correct menu is delivered to the correct room.
- Using a tray, deliver the meals from the (hot/cold trolley) to patients staying within the In Patient Unit.
- Clearing dishes from the rooms, kitchen surfaces, return trays and dishes to the trolley and/or kitchen.
- Make drinks for patients and their visitors as required.
- Keep the small kitchen on the In Patient Unit clean and tidy
- Stack and unload the dishwasher.
- Helping visitors and talking to patients.
- Maintaining a high standard of hygiene, ensure all long hair is tied back.
- Undertaking any other reasonable duties as requested by the clinicians.
- Report any accidents, incidents or complaints immediately to the In Patient Unit Ward Manager or senior nurse.
- Inform the staff of all aspects relating to patient needs or concerns.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience
- Smartly dressed person who has the ability to work as part of a team or on their own.
- To strictly maintain Jersey Hospice Care Non-Disclosure Agreement.
- Able to talk to people easily and perform simple written tasks as directed by the Volunteer Manager or Duty Nurse in charge.
- Ability to empathise with people in distress but at the same time avoiding becoming overly involved.
- Ability to safely carry a tray with hot food and hot drinks.
- Previous customer service experience would be useful but not essential.
- Must Be 17 years old and show an interest in a career in medicine
