Patient Companion – Emergency Department

Our Patient Companion volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the experience of patients at Tweed Valley Hospital. Your goal is to encourage a calm environment and help reduce feelings of anxiety.

The Emergency Department at Tweed Valley Hospital is responsible for triaging and managing a diverse range of patient needs. This is a very busy and sometimes unpredictable environment and requires volunteers to be alert and adaptable.

You will assist staff by greeting patients once they are admitted and

offering them support though reassuring conversation and distraction activities. Patient Companions relieve pressure from nursing staff, allowing them to deliver the best possible clinical care for patients.

A visit to the Emergency Department can be difficult for a patient’s loved ones and patient Companion volunteers may also offer comfort and support to a patient’s family and friends.

During quiet times you may assist staff by restocking supplies and compiling patient information packs.
