Animal Centre Guest Greeter, Join our team of animal lovers as a Guest Greeter with the BC SPCA! Work directly with staff & volunteers to ensure potential adopters and patrons are directed to the right resources, and provide excellent customer service to those looking for our support. You will be the first point of contact for visitors and have the opportunity to provide a warm welcome and leave a lasting impression by sharing your passion for our organization. Responsibilities • Interact with a steady flow of visitors, including staff, volunteers, families, school groups, and members of the public. • Provide visitors with appropriate resources, information, and materials, referring to staff when additional support is required. • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming entry area. • Organize, update, and promote informational materials • Report safety concerns, incidents, or injuries to staff immediately. • Report any operational or visitor-related concerns to staff and/or the Volunteer Lead in a timely manner. • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies and guidelines. Requirements & Training • Must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers aged 16-18 require a guardian complete the consent form in the application to be able to volunteer independently. • Strong, clear communication skills. Reliable, committed, organized, and task-focused. • Friendly and positive, even during busy or emotional moments. Collaborative and able to work well with staff and volunteers. • Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA's mission, vision, values, and strategic directions. Respectful of confidentiality and sensitive information. • Able to maintain situational awareness around animals and equipment. Basic organizational skills to keep entry areas tidy and stocked. Reliable and punctual with scheduled shifts. Comfortable engaging with a diverse range of visitors. • Open to feedback and willing to learn new procedures. Completion of BC SPCA online training required before starting. Volunteering Conditions • Setting: This role is performed primarily indoors, at the facility entrance, reception area, or designated greeting space. This role may involve extended standing or walking. Accommodations may be available, and it may be suitable for wheelchair users. Frequent interaction with the public, including answering basic questions and providing directions. Exposure to moderate noise levels typical of an animal care environment such as barking. Working around animals, with potential exposure to pet dander and related allergens. Environment may be busy and fast-paced, particularly during peak hours. • Flexible options: o Possibly suitable for wheelchair users and parent/youth pairs. Please indicate any required accommodations on your application so we can review what may be possible. Please note that not every location is able to offer these options. • Lifting and Moving: o Volunteers may occasionally need to lift or move light supplies, stationary materials, or equipment, requiring moderate physical effort. Modifications available. o Very minimal animal handling, if any, and only as directed by staff. • Safety Protocols and Potential Hazards: Volunteers must follow all BC SPCA safety policies and procedures. • Potential hazards: may include slippery floors, moving doors, or crowded entryways. Volunteers are expected to report safety concerns, incidents, or injuries to staff immediately Youth Volunteers • Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer. • Youth between the ages of 12-15: Can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian (19+ years old) • Youth between the ages of 16-18: Can volunteer with the consent of their guardians • Youth volunteering for school requirements: o depending upon the program requirements and amount of students submitting applications for this purpose, not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests. o For more information before submitting an application, contact yolunteers@spca.bc.ca to inquire.
