Veterinary Assistant Practicum.  During a 4-week practicum, students will gain hands-on experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital setting and assist with various tasks and responsibilities related to veterinary care.  Responsibilities:   • Assist Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) with routine medical procedures as well as the preparation and administration of medications.  • Provide care and support to animals in the clinic, including feeding, walking, restraint, and monitoring.  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the clinic, including laundry, sterilizing equipment and cleaning kennels.  • Interact with clients and manage paperwork while maintaining privacy & confidentiality.  • Observe and learn about diagnostic procedures, radiology, and laboratory work.  • Follow all BC SPCA policies and safety protocols.  Requirements & Training:   • Must be at least 19+ years of age.  Enrollment in a Veterinary Assistant program.  • Strong knowledge of animal care & handling.  Effective communication & interpersonal skills.  • Ability to work as part of a team.  Desire to learn and ability to adapt.  Willing to follow protocols & direction.  1 hour of online training plus on-site orientation and on-shift training.  Philosophical harmony with the BC SPCA's mission, vision, values, and strategic directions.  Volunteering Conditions:   ' Indoor and Outdoor Settings: Volunteers will work indoors in animal care areas, offices, and medical facilities and possibly outdoors walking dogs. Attire suitable for the weather conditions is required. ' Lifting and Moving: This role may involve standing, walking, bending, kneeling, moving and restraining small animals. Volunteers may need to lift or move animals, supplies and equipment. *Speak to us about modifications needed.  ' Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  ' Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards from being in an environment around animals such as bites, scratches, or exposure to zoonotic diseases. Training will cover how to minimize these risks.  Time Commitment:   • Approximately four weeks full-time, aligning with the requirements of their educational program. 7-8 hour shifts during the vet hospital/clinic's operating hours, schedule to be negotiated with student.
