Role Purpose

St Giles Hospice offers emotional, physical and practical support for our patients, and those important to them. Whether it’s helping with pain relief, supporting a loved one or just being there to listen, we understand that sometimes it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.

It costs over £10 million to deliver the care we provide each year and there is a growing need for our services. Only a third of our costs are provided by the NHS so we rely on the generosity of our community and funds raised in our café to help us deliver our care. Our Community Café is more than somewhere to enjoy great food and drink, it’s a welcoming space where people come together, connect with others and support the work of St Giles Hospice.

Our volunteers are instrumental in our success and play a huge role in the running of our community café through giving the gift of time.

What will I be doing?

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable food, beverage and hospitality experience, improve confidence and meet new people, or use your existing skills and knowledge in your local café to support the Hospice by giving anything from a few hours a week to being involved daily.

As a Front of House Volunteer, you’ll be one of the first people our customers meet. You’ll help create a warm. Friendly atmosphere while delivering excellent customer service by welcoming visitors, taking orders, serving food and drinks, and ensuring every customer has an enjoyable experience. Whether someone is visiting with friends, meeting family or simply looking for company over coffee, you’ll help make very visit special.

Tasks will include

Customer Experience

• Welcoming every customer with a warm friendly and professional approach
• Seat customers where appropriate and explain the menu, specials and daily offers
• Take food and drink orders accurately
• Operate the till and process cash and card payments
• Serve food, hot drinks, cold drinks and desserts safely and professionally
• Check customers are happy with their meals and respond positively to requests
• Thank customers for support St Giles Hospice

Café Environment

• Keep tables clean, cleared and ready for the next customer
• Ensure the café remains clean, welcoming and well presented throughout the day
• Restock condiments, cutlery, napkins and other customers areas
• Assis with opening and closing duties

Food Safety

• Follow all food hygiene and health & safety procedures
• Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness
• Report any concerns or hazards to the café Manager
• Handle food safely in line with training

Teamwork

• Work alongside paid staff and fellow volunteers to provide excellent customer service
• Be flexible and willing to help wherever needed during busy periods
• Attend relevant training and team meetings where appropriate

Alcohol Service (where applicable)

If the café is licensed to sell alcohol:

• Serve alcoholic drinks in accordance with St Giles Hospice policies and licensing requirements
• Only serve alcohol following appropriate training and under the direction of authorised staff
• Follow Challenge 25 procedures where required
• Never serve alcohol if concerned about age, intoxication or licensing requirements, referring any concerns to the manager

What do I need? 

You don’t need to have volunteered or worked in a Café before as full training will be provided.

What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow St Giles Hospice policies and can be an excellent ambassador for us.
