Role Purpose

St Giles Hospice offers emotional, physical and practical support for our patients, and those important to them. Whether it’s helping with pain relief, supporting a loved one or just being there to listen, we understand that sometimes it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.

It costs over £9 million to deliver the care we provide each year and there is a growing need for our services. Only a third of our costs are provided by the NHS so we rely on the generosity of our community and funds raised in our retail stores to help us deliver our care.

Our retail volunteers are instrumental in our success and play a huge role in the running of our community shops through giving the gift of time.

What will I be doing?

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable retail experience, improve confidence and meet new people, or use your existing skills and knowledge in your local store to support the Hospice by giving anything from a few hours a week to being involved daily.

Tasks will include

  • Sorting & pricing stock, checking for quality, value and condition.
  • Tagging, hanging, and organising donations
  • Customer service
  • Till operation & cash handling
  • Cleaning
  • Merchandising
  • Window display

What’s in it for me?

As one of our valued volunteers, we will offer you:

  • Gain valuable experience in a retail environment, getting involved in your local community and being part of a great team.
  • To build your confidence and develop transferable skills.
  • An induction and settling in period
  • Any training and development that is needed
  • Add your volunteering activity to your CV, and get a reference
  • The opportunity to make a difference to the lives of people at the hospice
  • Support within your role
  • Any out-of-pocket travel expenses
  • Lots of appreciation for your amazing contribution
  • Improved wellbeing and feeling good about helping others.

What do I need?

You don’t need to have volunteered or worked in a shop before as full training will be provided.

What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow St Giles Hospice policies and can be an excellent ambassador for us.

Two references will be required
