Role Purpose

St Giles Hospice offers emotional, physical and practical support for our patients, and those important to them. Whether it’s helping with pain relief, supporting a loved one or just being there to listen, we understand that sometimes it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference.

It costs over £10 million to deliver the care we provide each year and there is a growing need for our services. Only a third of our costs are provided by the NHS so we rely on the generosity of our community and funds raised in our café to help us deliver our care. Our Community Café is more than somewhere to enjoy great food and drink, it’s a welcoming space where people come together, connect with others and support the work of St Giles Hospice.

Our volunteers are instrumental in our success and play a huge role in the running of our community café through giving the gift of time.

What will I be doing?

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable hospitality experience, improve confidence and meet new people, or use your existing skills and knowledge in your local café to support the Hospice by giving anything from a few hours a week to being involved daily.

Our Community Hosts help make the café a place where everyone feels welcome. They create a warm, inclusive atmosphere by greeting visitors, spending time chatting with customers, supporting community events and ensuring everyone leaves with a smile.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys meeting people and making meaningful connections.

Tasks will include

Key Responsibilities

• Welcome customers as they arrive
• Offer a friendly face and conversation, particularly to those visiting alone
• Help customers find seating and settle in
• Check whether customers need any additional assistance
• Promote café events, activities and fundraising initiatives
• Support community groups using the café
• Help maintain a warm, relaxed atmosphere
• Encourage repeat visits through exceptional hospitality
• Assis with light front of house duties during busy periods
• Represent the values of St Giles Hospice at all times

What do I need? 

You don’t need to have volunteered or worked in a Café before as full training will be provided.

What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow St Giles Hospice policies and can be an excellent ambassador for us.
