ASSISTANT SWIM INSTRUCTOR - Assistant Swim Instructor
Description
Following the Lifesaving Society’s ‘Swim For Life’ program, the Assistant Swim Instructor will be actively helping in a swimming lesson. Volunteers in the Assistant Swim Instructor Position will be learning valuable hands-on experience for their future Lifeguard/Swim Instructor jobs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Be paired with an experienced certified Swim Instructor to help lead, assist and teach Swim for Life programs to City of Surrey’s public
- Come prepared with lesson plans for at least 1 activity for each lesson
- Follow and adheres to the Lifesaving’s Society’s Competency Level 1 form that was given during their Swim Instructor course
- Follow the curriculum knowledge of Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program
- Be active, wet and represent a model Swim Instructor
- Lead activities that are age and level appropriate
- Provide feedback to participants on skills
- Follow proper formations, progressions, teaching approaches and learning characteristics from the Lifesaving Society’s Swim Instructor course
- Educate participants on Water Smart Messaging
Report and Support
Assistant Swim Instructors will report to the Lesson Supervisors while working alongside an experienced certified Swim Instructor. Interviews and orientations will be conducted by the Supervisors of the pool.

This position requires being in the water for prolonged periods
Time Commitment
Volunteers are expected to sign up for volunteer shifts in a set ranging from 5 to 10 lessons in 2 to 4 hours per shift
Qualifications/Requirements, Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Bronze Cross certificate
- Lifesaving Society’s Swim Instructor certificate
- 15+ years of age
- Has a desire to become a Swim Instructor
- Comfortable engaging with school aged children and leading them in Swim for Life skills
- Flexible and able to teach any ‘Swim For Life’ level
- Able to accept supervision and direction
- Able to work alongside peers and receive feedback from peers
Education and Experience
- 8 hours of teaching experience from the Swim Instructor course
- Lesson planning knowledge is an asset

Step #1 – Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the Assistant Swim Instructor volunteer position, you must be:
- 15 years or older
- Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)
Step #2 – Apply
- Fill in an application
- Attend an interview
- Submit two (2) references
- Complete a Police Information Check
Step #3 – Volunteer
- When all the above steps have been completed, you will be contacted by phone or email by the Aquatics volunteer program administrator.
