La Trobe's Cottage - Heritage Futures Art Project

Heritage Futures Art Assistants help facilitate a hands-on experience where visitors decorate canvas using natural paints and dyes, inspired by the site they are visiting and how being in that place makes them feel. The role encourages connection to heritage, nature, and creative expression, enhancing the visitor experience while supporting NTAV’s education and engagement objectives.

Department: Conservation and Advocacy, Education and Public Programs
Supervisor / Reports To: The property staff with support from Erin Jamieson  and Maddi Moore
Volunteer Duties & Key Responsibilities can be; 
  • Set up trestle tables, art supplies, paints, tools, and canvas
  • Maintain a tidy and welcoming activity area throughout the day
  • Introduce the activity to visitors and encourage participation
  • Support visitors during the creative process as needed
  • Pack up materials and clean the activity space at the end of the day
Dates, Hours & Commitment
Hours: Open days/weekends; scheduled through Better Impact (BI)

Minimum commitment: At least twice per month during the project period

Minimum volunteers required: 4

Daily staffing: At least 2 volunteers per day (more welcome)

There may be opportunities to follow the project to additional sites such as Pentridge, McCrae, Geelong, and others (dates to be confirmed).
Induction / Information Session
Induction timing will be organised to suit volunteer availability.
Volunteers are encouraged (where possible) to observe the activity at Botanica on 10 May.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience 
Friendly, reliable, and comfortable engaging with the public
Interest in nature, heritage, and/or art

A creative mindset and willingness to encourage visitor participation

No formal art training is required.
Training & Support Provided by NTAV
  • On-site induction session with Erin J, Katherine M, and Maddi M
  • On-site toolkit and step-by-step “how-to” guide
  • Ongoing troubleshooting and support from on-site NTAV staff
