Public Programs and Education - Dress Detectives Collection Event Support at Old Melbourne Gaol
The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is seeking volunteers to support Dress Detectives: Up Close with the Fashion & Dress Collection, an engaging public program that provides participants with a rare opportunity to examine historic garments from the National Trust's Fashion & Dress Collection. This role is ideal for volunteers with an interest in fashion history, collection management, costume, textiles, conservation, museums, or public engagement. Experience handling collection materials is highly desirable.

Reports to NTV Staff
Time Commitment - 3-4 hours
Volunteer Tasks and Key Responsibilities can be;
Volunteers will work alongside National Trust staff to support the successful delivery of the session by:
- Welcoming attendees and assisting with visitor management
- Escorting late-arriving ticket holders to the event space with minimal disruption to the session
- Monitoring the handling of collection items and ensuring attendees follow handling instructions
- Assisting staff to facilitate participant engagement and discussion about the garments
- Supporting conversations around garment construction, materials, condition, and historical significance
- Helping maintain a safe and professional environment for both visitors and collection objects
Skills and Experience
Volunteers should ideally have:
- Experience working with museum, archive, or collection materials, particularly textiles and dress collections
- An interest in fashion history, costume, textiles, conservation, or heritage collections
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Confidence interacting with members of the public
- The ability to follow collection handling and conservation procedures
- Reliability and professionalism
Training and Support
Volunteers will receive a comprehensive briefing from National Trust staff before the event commences, including guidance on handling procedures, event logistics, and key information about the garments featured in the session.
