Waller House - Trainee Preventative Conservation Cleaning
Begin your training to join the NTAV Collections team in helping care for the historic collections housed across National Trust properties throughout Victoria. This hands-on role is ideal for those interested in heritage conservation, historic interiors, and the practical work of collection care.
Volunteers assist Collections staff in maintaining the condition of objects and interiors by following professional preventative conservation practices and working systematically through rooms and spaces within historic properties.
Reports directly to the NTAV Collections Manager
Tasks can include:
- Reviewing the site’s housekeeping diary to identify recent cleaning activity
- Selecting rooms or areas to focus on, ensuring the collection is not overcleaned
- Dusting objects, furniture, and building fabric using approved preventative conservation techniques
- Updating the housekeeping diary with completed tasks
- Selecting and completing tasks from the intensive cleaning list
- Following NTAV housekeeping manual guidelines for cleaning methods and safety

Going forward Time: Flexible of a Thursday coordinated with Collections staff
Skills Required:
Attention to detail, care and respect for historic objects, ability to follow instructions and work independently. Training in object handling and preventative conservation cleaning will be provided. No prior experience required.
Important Notes:
- Always wear white cotton or nitrile gloves while cleaning
- Dust masks are available if preferred
- Follow correct object handling procedures at all times
- Do not lift heavy objects or furniture
- Ask operational staff for access to locked areas if needed
