POSITION TITLE:         Gardener Assistant Volunteer

                                       

SCHEDULE:                   2 hour shifts, spots open Mon-Fri, daytime

 

REPORTS TO:               Urban Farm Community Coordinator and/or Farm Manager

 

POSITION SUMMARY

In the heart of Abbotsford, a small working farm grows food for local markets and programs. This outdoor volunteer role is ideal for those interested in gardening and willing to work in all weather, using hand tools on a variety of tasks. Volunteers work with the gardening team to support physically active work that helps grow local food and reduce food insecurity.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planting, harvesting, watering, feeding, and general care of plants, lawns, and garden beds
  • Garden and grounds maintenance (weeding, mulching, digging, edging, path upkeep, litter picking)
  • Building and maintaining garden structures (e.g., supports, fruit cages)
  • Assisting with visitor interactions, events, and general site activities

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • Home Gardening knowledge an asset.

  • Ability and willingness to communicate

  • Demonstrate honesty and authenticity
  • Willingness to learn
  • Successfully complete a Criminal Record Check Vulnerable Sector
  • Minimum commitment growing season.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Working out of doors, prepared for rain or sun
  • Physical lifting and bending
  • Able to lift 35- 50 lb
  • Sustain periods of standing

COMMITMENT

  • to commit to a regular weekly or bi-weekly 2-hour shift (Monday to Friday) for the gardening season of April to October. Recognizing that vacations/other commitments may require flexing this schedule.
  • Attend a garden orientation
