Education Program Support Volunteer

Position Summary 

Sam Centre Education Volunteers will work under the direction of the Sam Centre Education Team, including the Sam Centre Education Coordinator and Education Facilitators, to deliver this programming and create an exceptional experience for students, teachers, and school volunteers. Sam Centre currently supports curriculum’s from grade one through to grade six. 

 

Responsibilities  

  • Review Daily schedule with Education Coordinator and Facilitators at start of shift and ensure you know the flow of your class, when you will take lunch, and how your class will interact in the space with other classes.
  • Engage with students and parent volunteers during class-time and encourage and guide student participation with interactives.
  • Help guide students into designated areasshow parents and children to washrooms and back, and ensure nothing has been left behind at end of day.
  • Help facilitators with activity set up, execution and take down as required. 

 

Qualifications 

  • An ability to learn and retell stories with accuracy and passion while captivating your audience.
  • Ability to develop rapport with students and parents through clear communication, active listening, and empathy.
  • Ability to adapt your communication style to suit individual needs.
  • Willingness to adapt to new instructions, changing priorities or new requirements of the role without resistance.
  • An ability to undertake responsibilities of the role with minimum supervision.
  • Previous experience working with children and/or enjoyment and pleasure working with children.
  • At this time, all interested applicants must be 18 and over. 

 
Accessibility noticeTypical physical demands of the role include standing or sitting for long periods of time. Volunteers in this role must be mobile to maneuver around the exhibit spaces and able to lift light loads (10 lbs or less). 
 
Time Commitment 

Sam Centre Education Program runs throughout the academic year, Monday - Wednesday, from September to June, and occasionally on Thursdays and Fridays. Shifts are during school hours and typically five (5) hours in duration.
 
The time commitment and requirements include:

  • At least 20 shifts per year (or 60 hours) and at least 1 full Committee meeting per year;
  • Completion of a Criminal Record Check;
  • Complete all required general Sam Centre training (estimated 10 hours), as well as Education Program training (estimated 2-3 hours); and
  • Remain up to date on all required training (approximately 10 hours/year).
