We prioritise people from our local community here in Salford, as one of our aims is to provide opportunities for local people where we can.

Volunteers are able to claim travel expenses - see Role Descriptions for full details.

Our Current Volunteering Opportunities

Exhibition Welcome Host

Exhibition Welcome Hosts provide a warm welcome to the Garden, introducing visitors to the art installations at Bridgewater. These volunteers will engage with and inform visitors about our upcoming OFFSHOOT exhibition, including information about the wider project and it's reach all over the region. 
We're looking for 5 volunteers, who are regularly available for shifts on Tuesdays, weekends and school holidays throughout the running of the exhibition. This is a fixed-term opportunity for the duration of the exhibition, which is running from April 2026 - February 2027.

Plant Centre Volunteer

Plant Centre Volunteers provide a warm welcome, ensuring that all visitors have an enjoyable and memorable visit, and in particular helping and advising customers in the Plant Centre.

We’re looking for 1 volunteer to join the team on a Saturday.  Shifts are around 7 hours including breaks between 10am and 5pm.

Learning Volunteer

Learning Volunteers help with the running of engaging learning activities inspired by the rich surroundings of RHS Bridgewater. Schools sessions run throughout term time, and adult education courses and workshops run at any time of year.

 

We're looking for 1 volunteer for a regular Friday 9.30-4pm and 1 flexible volunteer - shift times can sometimes vary depending on the activity.

Community Grow Volunteer

Community Grow Volunteers provide support and knowledge to local groups in the Community Grow Garden, so that they can learn about productive gardening through practical experience. The volunteers also help to maintain the Community Grow Garden and support groups of young adults. This role is physically demanding. 

We’re looking for 1 volunteer who is able to commit to one regular day per week: Thursdays 11am-4pm

New Shoots Volunteer

The New Shoots team are leading a new RHS initiative to increase the number and diversity of individuals choosing green careers and/or volunteering, with a particular project to engage more young people aged 14-35. The team manages the school and adult work experience programmes, attend local/national careers fairs, and are developing sustainable practical training hub gardens. The New Shoots Volunteers help with the running of activities, support at career fairs and help to maintain specific areas of the garden with the New Shoots participants.

We’re looking for 2 flexible volunteers to join the team.

Fruit Volunteer

RHS Garden Bridgewater has a wide range of fruit trees and soft fruit bushes across the estate.  This includes national collections of apples and pears, trained fruit, gooseberries and rhubarb. The Fruit Volunteers will help the Fruit Specialist in the maintenance of this world class collection to ensure the highest RHS standards are upheld.  They will also provide a warm welcome to visitors.

We’re looking for 2 volunteers on Wednesdays (10am – 3pm).

Woodland and Estates Volunteer

Help with the maintenance and development of the garden to the highest RHS standards, working across the woodland and estate. This role is physically demanding.

We are looking for 2 volunteers on a Wednesday 8am-1pm.

Inner Walled Garden Volunteer

Inner Walled Garden Volunteers help with the maintenance and development of the Inner Walled Garden to the highest RHS standards, and provide a warm welcome to visitors. This role is physically demanding and allows volunteers to experience a variety of areas of horticulture. 

 

We’re looking for 5 volunteers who can commit to one session per week: 3 volunteers for Thursday's 8am to 1pm inc. breaks and 2 volunteers for Friday's 8am to 1pm inc. breaks.

Herbals Garden Volunteer

Join the Herbal Garden Volunteer Team where you will be predominantly working in the kitchen garden but in other areas of the garden too when needed. An interest in plants that are used for dyes, teas and tinctures would be beneficial as well as an interest in growing flowers for cutting. This role can be physically demanding, including mulching, weeding, cutting back, planting and pruning.

Edibles Garden Volunteer

Join the Edibles Garden Volunteer Team where you will be working specifically within the productive area of the kitchen garden, but may be required to work in other areas at times. An interest in growing fruit and vegetables would be beneficial, but not necessary. You will be working with a small team to harvest crops each week for the harvest hub and cafe. This role can be physically demanding and tasks will include mulching, planting crops, removing spent crops, creating structures, weeding and pruning.

Welcome Landscape and Car Park Volunteer

We are looking for 2 Welcome Landscape and Car Park Volunteers for one Wednesday a month to support the Woodland Team in maintaining the welcome landscape and car park of RHS Bridgewater. For the other three Wednesdays of the month, these volunteers will be a part of the Wednesday Woodland and Estates volunteer team.

This role will include digging out plants such as Vinca, Lamium and Bog Rosemary, tidying up the pathways and flower bed edges, planting grasses and shrubs, wildflower seed sowing and collection (seasonal), taking cuttings eg. cornus, habitat creation and pruning of the willow and cornus. You will be involved in the planning and monitoring of this large area of the garden, which stretches from Leigh Road to the Welcome building at RHS Bridgewater. This role is physically demanding, involving a lot of walking so requires a reasonable level of fitness.
