Volunteers play a crucial role at the MaST Center Aquarium. Projects throughout the facility are made possible because of their dedication and support. Volunteers help enhance the local community through education and environmental awareness, while working to accomplish our goals of research, education and general improvement of the Puget Sound.

Information about Volunteering

  • Volunteers DO NOT need experience to join any of our teams.
  • Individuals must be 10+ years old to participate. Volunteers 10-13 years old must have a guardian volunteer with them.
  • ALL prospective volunteers must submit an application and attend a New Volunteer Orientation before starting.
  • All training will be offered at the MaST Center Aquarium.

General Interests

Education and Outreach

Help teach the public about the marine animals in our aquarium and answer questions about our specimen collection. Volunteer shifts are Saturdays 9:30am-2:30pm year round. Also, Sundays 9:30am-2:30pm in July and August. 

Life Support

Learn how to take care of our 250+ species in the aquarium. Help the Life Support Team clean tanks and feed the animals. 

Food Prep and Feedings - Mondays 4pm-5pm & Fridays 10am-12pm
Tank Tech Training - Mondays & Thursdays 5pm-7pm
Tank Cleaning - Mondays & Thursdays 5pm-7pm, Fridays 12:30pm-2:30pm, and Sundays 10:30am-12:30pm
Special Projects - Wednesdays 10am-3pm

Co-Science

Assist in collecting scientific data that will be used by government agencies to help predict future crab harvest numbers and forecasting harmful algal blooms (HABs). 

Larval Light Trap - Monday, Wednesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays 9:30am-11:30am
Plankton Tow Survey - Tuesdays 12pm-2pm 

K-12 Field Trips

Help lead school groups through learning station or beach investigation. These are scheduled throughout the school year Tuesday-Friday mornings. 

Community Outreach

Table at public events educating guests about the MaST Center and the marine environment. Volunteer shifts are usually on the weekends at farmer's markets, libraries, and city events. 

Marine Mammal Stranding Team

Provide first response to marine mammals on our shores and further the knowledge of local community members by providing on-site education.
