Wintering & Migratory Bird Stewardship - Winter Stewardship - Jones Park
Wintering and Migratory Bird Stewardship
During the fall, four billion birds pass through the Gulf of Mexico as part of their migration.
Mississippi hosts numerous species that utilize the beaches for rest and to forage on before
continuing their long journeys south. It is imperative that these migrating birds be able to rest
and feed or as a result may perish. Audubon Bird Stewards help raise awareness about these
often-overlooked migrants. During the winter, species such as the endangered Piping Plover
often call Mississippi’s beaches home. A true snow bird!
By volunteering to be a Bird Steward you can help reduce human-related disturbance to resting
and foraging birds, encourage observance of local dog ordinances, promote proper trash
disposal, and bring awareness to not feed any wildlife.
The Coastal Stewardship Program will provide any equipment you may need for your shift including optics, umbrella, chair, outreach materials etc. Just let Amanda Douglas, our Stewardship Coordinator know if you need something specific. Participants are asked to meet in the east parking bay of Jones Park near the Harbor Masters office at 12:00pm. You will be given data sheets to record interactions that occur during your shift. Our staff will provide a brief training before your shift and make sure that you are comfortable collecting data. It is a simple form. Thank you for your interest in helping protect the birds. See you at the beach!
