Staff-Led Audubon Coastal Bird Surveys - DeBuys Road-Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS-ACBS
Debuys Road-Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS-ACBS
Join Audubon volunteers and staff to count and document coastal bird species. This survey provides valuable data for addressing the conservation needs of coastal birds that breed, migrate and winter along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Duration: 1.5 hours
Site Type: Mainland Beach
Site Description: This site is a mainland artificial beach system. In the spring, our busiest colonial nesting colony provides opportunities to see hundreds of least terns and black skimmers. Throughout other seasons, a variety of shorebirds are often seen on the tide line. Waterfowl, pelicans, and loons are especially abundant in winter on the offshore waters. Busy Highway 90 restricts most of the bird observations to the beach or water, but sometimes you may see raptors, grackles, starlings, or mockingbirds perched on live oaks.
Meeting location: Meet at the parking bay just east of the Cowan Rd/Highway 90 intersection. This parking bay is next to the permanently fenced Least Tern area, and the parking bay has informational signage and a bench next to it.
Survey Transect: This transect is 1 mile long. The west end is Cowan Road. The east end is across from the Great Southern Golf Club.
Transect GPS Coordinates: Start- 30.381889N 89.025194W Stop- 30.385694N 89.009000W
