Audubon Coastal Bird Survey-Harrison County - DeBuys Road-Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS-ACBS
Debuys Road-Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS-ACBS
Join Audubon volunteers to count and document coastal bird species. This survey provides valuable data for addressing the conservation needs of coastal birds that breed, migrate and winter along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Duration: 1.5 hours
Site Type: Mainland Beach
Site Description: This site is a mainland artificial beach system. In the spring, the site contains a busy Least Terns nesting area. Throughout other seasons, a variety of shorebirds are often seen on the tide line. Waterfowl, pelicans, and loons are especially abundant in winter on the offshore waters. Busy Highway 90 restricts most of the bird observations to the beach or water, but sometimes you may see Osprey, Loggerhead Shrike, and Northern Mockingbirds perched on the live oaks.
Meeting location: Meet at the parking bay at the intersection of Cowan Road and Highway 90.
Survey Transect: This transect is 1 mile long. The west end is Cowan Road. The east end is across from the Great Southern Golf Club.
Transect GPS Coordinates: Start- 30.381889N 89.025194W, Stop- 30.385694N 89.009000W
