Registered Veterinary Technician Volunteer Position

 Brief MASH Overview

  • MASH clinics are often held in more remote areas of Ontario and require some long-distance travel to various Ontario communities such as Constance Lake and Akwesasne.
  • Spay/Neuter clinics will take place from April – October, with one per month except for the month of May.
  •  MASH clinics are 3 to 4 days with travel required before and after the clinic (5-6 days total).
  • Shared accommodations and carpooling, when possible, will be arranged by the MASH team.
  • All meals during the clinic are covered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with setup and takedown of the mobile unit as needed.
  • Assist with admitting patients for surgery.
  • Able to support in the surgical prep area with IV catheterization and intubation of both cat and dog.
  • Surgical monitoring and safe recovery of surgical patients.
  • Provide daily care of all surgical patients and conduct maintenance of preventative health programs and medical protocols within the MASH clinic setting.
  • Assist DVMs with exams, both pre and post-op surgery.
  • Ensure medical equipment, medications, and supplies are available and stored in a safe and appropriate manner, including the safe disposal of narcotics.
  • Assist, when necessary, with autoclaving, medication preparation and cleaning of work areas. General duties to keep the workflow flowing efficiently.
  • Ensure Ontario SPCA policies and procedures related to infection control are followed.
  • Follow safety, sanitation, and medical protocols.

Qualifications

  • RVT credentialed or equivalent
  • Be a member of good standing of the OAVT or equivalent
  • Relevant employment experience in a veterinary clinic
  • Previous surgical prep and monitoring within a high-volume setting is an asset
  • Ability to lift 18 kg (40lbs) and to stand for long periods
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a mobile, field-based environment
