Hatton Art Gallery are looking for Volunteer Gallery stewards for the exhibition, The potters Canvas: Ceramics and Painting in the 20th Century.
This Role is for those age 18+
Tasks
To provide a welcoming and friendly face to all visitors to the Hatton Gallery’s exhibition, The Potter's Canvas: Ceramics and Painting in the 20th Century. To answer visitor enquiries, or direct visitors to the appropriate person to assist them. To recognise any potential health and safety risks, or risks to the artworks, and report them to a member of staff.
This role will require volunteers to enjoy engaging with visitors of all ages, and to help them get the most from their visit. You will need a friendly, approachable manner and a willingness to answer visitor enquiries, or to direct enquiries to the appropriate person. We hope that volunteer invigilators will improve the visitor experience by supporting our Front of House team.

A friendly, approachable manner and willingness to help visitors of all ages. No specialised knowledge of art is required, as information will be provided about the exhibition.
Good to know:
The shift times can be flexible, so if you’d like to attend a shift, but find you need to arrive a little late, or leave a little early that’s fine.
We are looking for volunteers to invigilate specific rooms in the Hatton Gallery’s exhibition. During your shift you can walk around your room or be seated, whatever you feel more comfortable doing.
Food and drink aren’t allowed in the galleries, so if you need a drink or a snack, you are welcome to use the staff kitchen. The Hatton Gallery doesn’t have a café, however there are a number of food and drink outlets amongst the Newcastle University buildings, and many more in Newcastle City Centre. The nearby Great North Museum (just over the road) has a café.
Level of English Required.
To do this role you need to be able to:
understand times and dates
Have short, simple conversations
understand detailed instructions with 2 or 3 parts
read short sentence and simple instructions.

A choice of shifts from:
Monday to Saturdays 19th September 2026 to the 16th January 2027
