Woodhorn Museum - Creative Conversation Facilitator
This role is suitable for those age 18+
About the Role: We are looking for facilitators to chat and support informal English language practise sessions for those learning English as an additional language.
These are free family-friendly drop-in sessions to practice English inspired by Woodhorn Museum and its collections. You will use handling objects, archive photos, archive film, and paintings on display in the museum as inspiration to start conversations and discussion. You will be supported to explore these topics and develop your own sessions, if you wish to.
We are keen for this opportunity to develop and be led by those involved in the sessions, taking their lead when inspired and wishing to explore a topic further. You will be supported by staff in this process.
The aim of this volunteer role is to enhance the participant’s quality of experience, provide new social opportunities, promote community integration, and develop new or expand on existing skills. You will gain experience in arts and heritage, in a community setting, and working with disadvantaged / under-represented groups. After volunteering, we are able to generate a reference on request.
Tasks: You will be involved in creating a welcoming and safe environment for the participants, making teas and coffees, and chatting with them to develop their English language skills through relaxed discussion.
Our focus is both in supporting people in their English language development in conjunction with celebrating our varied heritage, identities, and cultures.
Skills
We are looking for someone skills and experience of working with people, of creating a warm, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere, and with a good level of conversational English or a native speaker. Experience of supporting others with English as an additional language is an advantage, but is not essential.
Good to know
Woodhorn Museum is accessible to wheelchair users.
This session involves working with a group of people, and may get busy.
