Tyne and Wear Archives - Curatorial Volunteer, UOSH (Unlocking Our Sound Heritage)
Unlocking Our Sound Heritage is a major UK wide project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by the British Library, which will help save the nation's sounds and open them up to everyone. The project aims to digitally preserve almost 500,000 endangered sound recordings from across the UK and make 100,000 available online, transforming the visibility of sound archive collections in the process. These rare and unique recordings are threatened by physical degradation or are stored on formats that are becoming obsolete. It is believed that we have approximately 15 years in which to save many of the nation’s sound collections through digitisation, before they become unreadable and are effectively lost forever.
Acting as the Hub for the North East and Yorkshire, TWAM will digitise material from our collection and the collections of partner organisations over the next three years. Recordings will be digitised onsite at Discovery Museum, using specialist equipment and shared with the British Library to form a collection of national recordings made publicly available online.
Curatorial volunteers will work alongside the Project Manager to develop content for a new digital platform which will share interesting stories in fun ways.
Inspired by the collections being digitised as part of the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage Project, you could share these hidden stories by writing a short essay, an image led piece, create a serial (unpacking a narrative over a few instalments), film, audio etc. You could even produce a response to the collection as fiction or poetry. It’s up to you!
