VOLUNTEERING IN LONG-TERM CARE Applications are now open
Volunteers are a valued part of the Island Health team, bringing connection, companionship, and a sense of community to residents living in long-term care homes throughout the Greater Victoria area. Your time can make a meaningful difference in someone's day.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Activity/Social Engagement Volunteers
Support residents during arts, social, recreational, or exercise programs:
- Assist residents needing support with an activity such as reading a bingo card
- Bring residents to and from the group activities & encourage participation
- Support staff by preparing group activity materials & helping with set-up or clean-up
Spend time with residents, providing companionship to brighten their day:
- Provide one-on-one visits, spending time chatting with residents
- Play cards or board games with residents
- Read books, magazine articles and newspapers
- Share other interests - Entertainment Volunteer
Share your musical talents by singing, playing an instrument, or leading a sing-along.
Locations
- You must be available to volunteer for a regular AM or PM shift during weekdays between 10am and 4pm.
- There are currently no volunteer shifts available in the evenings or on weekends.
- Shifts are typically 2-3 hours in duration.
- Volunteers are asked to commit to a regular weekday shift for at least 3 months to build relationships.
Required Skills & Abilities
- above average communication skills
- ability to or willingness to learn to engage with clients with varying cognitive needs
- a desire to share your skills, interests and talents with others

VOLUNTEERING IN PUBLIC HEALTH Applications are currently paused
Support wellness in the community through volunteering with Public Health clinics.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Child Health Clinic Volunteer
- Support parents/caregivers as they weigh and measure their babies
- Record the weights and measures
- Refer parent/caregiver to the Public Health Nurse with concerns and questions
Locations
Considerations
- Clinic days and times vary by location by typically occur on a weekday morning or afternoon.
- Shifts are typically 3-4 hours in duration.
- Volunteers are asked to commit to a regular weekday shift for 6 months to give time to learn and settle into the role.
