Ribbon Community

Welcome to Ribbon Community, formerly known as AIDS Vancouver. In March 2024, we changed our name to Ribbon Community.

We chose the concept of ribbon for our new name and look to pull the past, present, and future of the HIV response together, connecting the many communities that make Ribbon Community possible. Our logo is the red ribbon in the form of an r, rather than the ā€˜v’ shape of the original ribbons developed by a group of artists called Visual AIDS.

Volunteer Opportunities

Friends of May

Friends of May is an program that pairs passionate volunteers with older adults living with HIV/AIDS.

Friends of May offers the chance for cross-generational sharing of knowledge, experiences, activism, companionship, and fun.

Grocery Program

We provide one grocery bag per person, with a range of produce, protein, hygiene items, and dairy, to choose from.

Volunteers contribute hundreds of hours each year to make this program possible. Volunteer roles include picking up food items, receiving deliveries, welcoming clients to the space, and accompanying clients as they shop the space.

Resource Centre

Resource Centre volunteers are responsible for making sure that the space is welcoming for anybody accessing services at Ribbon Community. Volunteers offer clients coffee, food, and assist with computer and TV use.

The Corner

The Corner is a confidential drop-in community program for male and gender diverse sex workers.

We provide a mix of programming, social connection, and access to health and harm reduction services such as STI testing and vaccination. In addition, The Corner offers a Substance Use Support Group based on a contingency management model.

The Corner is a collaboration between Vancouver Coastal Health and AIDS Vancouver, and is staffed by mix of Peer Navigators, Program Coordinators, and Case Managers, in addition to wonderful volunteers.

Office Volunteer

We are always happy to have helping hands around the office! There are a variety of tasks that we could always use assistance with, including:

  • Paper shredding
  • Organizing donations
  • Office supply organization

And more!

If you are interested in gaining some volunteer hours with some casual shifts, feel free to sign up. Tasks will most likely vary shift to shift.

Ribbon Grocery - Vancouver

Ribbon Grocery provides people living with HIV and their families a range of free produce, protein, pantry and hygiene items to choose from. We are open 28 weeks each year, based around the Income Assistance payment schedule issued by the provincial government.

This program provides practical support for community members experiencing income or food insecurity. Ribbon Grocery offers a mix of food items we purchase to distribute to our communities with input from our clients, and food items that are donated to us while they are still safe to consume but past their best before date.

Volunteers contribute hundreds of hours each year to make this program possible. Volunteer roles include picking up food items, receiving deliveries, shelving and stocking items, bagging produce, welcoming clients to the space, and accompanying clients as they shop the space for free.

About Us

Our purpose statement

We support and empower our communities in overcoming the impacts of HIV and HIV stigma.

Our values

More information about each value is available here.

  • We nurture meaningful involvement of people living with HIV.
  • We welcome our communities.
  • We honour every journey.
  • We are accountable.

Ultimately, our purpose, values, and name are a celebration of our communities past and present: what we have built, and what we have learned along the way; the connection and community borne out of remarkable grief and loss. As we share our new purpose, values, name and look, we are also celebrating what you told us you want to see change, the parts of us that will stay the same, and most importantly, they ways we will continue to show up for people living with HIV - and our broader communities - for years to come.
