Sign-up to join Evergreen's Compost Club in Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026!  

Join Evergreen’s Compost Club and help to support Evergreen Brick Work’s mission to advance our waste management initiatives year-round! 

Compost Club is back at Evergreen Brick Works! Participants in this program will join us in creating “black gold” out of yard waste and Farmers Market food scraps, all while learning about the science of decomposition. Activities include tracking compost piles across their life cycles, turning compost, breaking down yard waste, and exploring compost-adjacent projects like making organic garden amendments. 

👉 What You Bring:      

  • You’re passionate about composting, urban agriculture and waste management, or interested in learning more. 
  • You're keen to help grow healthy soil without store-bought fertilizers.  
  • You feel comfortable working with food scraps and literally getting your hands dirty.  
  • You work well both independently and within a group.  
  • Having an interest in public engagement, compost systems maintenance, and/or education is an asset.  
  • Can respect and adhere to Health and Safety protocols as identified by staff to ensure the safety of all Evergreeners.  
  • Some heavy lifting may be required (under 25 lbs.)  
  • Are at least 15 years old or older. Volunteers 14 years old and under need to volunteer alongside a parent or guardian.   
     

🌟 Tasks & Responsibilities:   

  • Working together to process yard waste and food waste on a weekly basis, 
  • Chopping greens and browns, 
  • Aerating compost piles, 
  • Taking compost material measurements,  
  • Sifting finished compost,  
  • Distributing finished compost to garden beds. 

⏰ When: Compost Club shifts take place each Wednesday evening from 5-7pm.  

Note: Compost Club begins Wednesday May 13th and is expected to run until late October.   

Compost Club shifts are open to a maximum of 10 volunteers each week. Volunteers will sign-up for shifts on a first come-first served basis. Due to limited spaces, volunteers are asked to remove themselves from schedules if their availability changes to make space for other volunteers.   

📍Where & Getting Here:  Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Ave). Accessible by TTC bus at Davisville Station or our free shuttle bus outside Broadview Station. ✨ Commitment Expectation:  Volunteers are encouraged to participate in Compost Club on a weekly basis, from May to October.  

🌳 How We Will Support You: Compost Club continuously onboards through the spring, summer and fall. Compost Club volunteers are encouraged review an info package with key training information and important details. After learning from the info package, volunteers may sign up for shifts in their volunteer profile. Volunteers will be supported and supervised by staff through the duration of their shifts.  

🤝 Perks & What You'll Gain: Compost Club volunteers can take pride as they contribute to regenerative soil building at the Brick Works, learning about composting, creating a sense of community with other compost-curious volunteers. You’ll get to work with experts in urban agriculture and ecology and expand your experience and knowledge in these areas by learning through doing. 🔎 Good to Know: Compost Club volunteers need to dress for the weather, as we work through light rain. As you’re working with garden and food waste, it would be great to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required. Please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Activities will vary depending on the week and site needs.
