Toronto - Evergreen Brick Works - Urban Ecology and Agriculture - Garden Circle
Sign up for shifts below and join the Garden Circle team to help advance gardening and urban agriculture opportunities at Evergreen Brick Works!
Be a part of keeping Evergreen Brick Works green! Each Wednesday morning and Thursday evening, Garden Circle volunteers will help to support a range of initiatives ranging from:
- Gardening (invasive plants removal, landscaping, soil building, etc.)
- Urban Agriculture (planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, etc.)
- Special build days (carpentry + building skills an asset but not necessary!)
- and Compost Systems (maintenance, organics collection, sorting, turning compost, etc.).
Volunteers on this team can take pride in helping to bring nature to the city, create connections with their community, and expand their knowledge and skills in these important areas in sustainability.
What you bring: You want to get your hands dirty, and do physical work in small groups. You’re willing to work in some inclement weather. No gardening experience necessary. Family groups are invited to apply.
When and where:
Wednesday mornings (9am-12pm) starting May 1st and running to the end of September
Thursday evenings (6 pm-8 pm)
-->at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Ave)
Commitment: This is a drop-in opportunity, so volunteers may join us for as many or as few shifts as they like throughout the Garden Circle season (May-September). Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for shifts, in advance, so that we may reach out beforehand with any important details (what to wear, cancellations, things to bring, etc.)
How we'll support you: Volunteers will be supported by staff and other volunteer leads throughout their shifts. Volunteers who have signed up for shifts will receive ongoing communications from the Evergreen Brick Works team
Perks: You’ll get to work with experts in urban agriculture and ecology, and expand your experience and knowledge in these areas by learning through doing. Be a part of a larger community of people striving to make Toronto an even more flourishing city! Volunteers can also take pride in seeing their work presented on the site and enjoying eating what you grow together.
*Volunteers demonstrating great dedication and leadership in this team may be invited to take on a greater role as a Garden Circle Leader.*
As always, t-shirts, 15% discount on Evergreen Garden Market purchases, and up to 20% off on Evergreen's Active Living Discount Card, are just some of the many ways we thank our volunteers who contribute 20+ hours in a season.
Good to know: You’ll need to dress for the weather, as we work through light rain. Sturdy shoes (closed toe) please, as well as a water bottle. Activities will vary depending on the week and site needs.
We may reach out to volunteers infrequently with updates about unexpected shift cancellations, reminders to come prepared, etc. Please make sure to check the landing page of Better Impact before your shifts to make sure Garden Circle is still happening, should there be inclement weather.
Volunteers can get to the Brick Works via the free shuttle bus from Broadview station. The TTC 28 Bayview South bus from Davisville station regularly stops at EB. There is also paid parking on-site, bike racks available. How to get here.
