BC - Climate Risks - Bilingual Scribe-Host (Cantonese/Mandarin –English) - Climate Risks Community Engagement – Summer/Fall 2019
Bring your English-Chinese language skills to help engage vulnerable populations in conversation around climate risks such as extreme heat and poor air quality from wildfires to foster understanding and catalyze change. Through Evergreen’s Climate Risks Project, Chinese seniors from Vancouver will be invited to share their experiences, concerns over future risks, and priorities to help identify the potential climate adaptation strategies that would be the most helpful for addressing climate change impacts.
Bilingual Scribe-Hosts will capture detailed notes of the day (in English) and support the writing of post-event summaries, including event stats. They will help to provide attendee support in Cantonese/Mandarin languages, along with general logistical support throughout the sessions. You’ll be ensuring a well-run, impactful event that will help inform future strategies for sustainable and flourishing cities for all.
What you bring: You have excellent written and oral English communication skills with an ability to take great notes. You have strong comprehension and oral Cantonese and/or Mandarin language skills. You are a friendly, committed team player. Community engagement and knowledge of climate change issues or interest is an asset.
When & where: Please see upcoming dates below. Some events will take place outdoors, rain or shine.
How we’ll support you: You will participate in a pre-event orientation, and receive details about Evergreen and the event. During the day, you will be working closely with the BC Program Manager.
Perks: Deepen your knowledge of climate change issues and their impacts on vulnerable populations. Gain experience providing outreach support to Chinese seniors, along with event experience.
Good to know: We are ideally looking for two volunteers (one for Mandarin, and one for Cantonese). Ideally, you would provide your own laptop in order to take notes, but this is not required.
