Volunteer Positions

Community Outreach Ambassador

Summary: Community Outreach Ambassadors represent the museum at community events utilizing fun biofacts such as feathers, furs, scales, skulls, and other promotional materials to promote the museum and its mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend local community events with museum staff or other museum volunteers.
  • Utilize biofacts and promotional materials to draw the attention attendees of community events, and provide information about the museum to the attendees.
  • Assist with the set-up and breakdown of tables, tents, and/or promotional materials.
  • Communicate effectively with large and diverse audiences to promote the museum, its mission, and its vision.

Relevant Skills:

  • Knowledge and/or interest in nature and science.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a variety of settings, including outdoors, and with the general public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to relate to diverse age groups and educational levels positively and professionally.

Program/Tour Assistant

Summary: The Programs and Tours Assistant assists museum staff with school tours and educational programs. They assist museum staff with the presentation of science concepts to diverse audiences, the management of large groups of guests, and maintaining a positive and inclusive experience for all guests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet and welcome tour groups as they arrive at the museum.
  • Escorting groups to and from locations within the museum, such as designated lunch areas.
  • Assist with the presentation of science concepts to large and diverse audiences.
  • Assist with cleaning and resetting classrooms for other museum activities.
  • Enforce safety rules and assist with guest safety.

Relevant Skills:

  • Knowledge and/or interest in nature and science.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a variety of settings and with the general public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to relate to diverse age groups and educational levels positively and professionally.

Gallery Interpretation Assistant

Summary: Interpretation Assistants greet and educate guests about specific exhibits at the museum. They assist in interpretation and facilitating a positive, inclusive, and creative museum experience while becoming involved with the greater community of museum guests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet museum guests in a positive and friendly manner.
  • Be knowledgeable enough about exhibits to answer general questions from museum guests.
  • Inform museum guests of upcoming exhibits, programs, and events.
  • Report any maintenance issues.
  • Enforce safety rules and assist with guest safety.

Relevant Skills:

  • Knowledge and/or interest in nature and science.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a variety of settings and with the general public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to relate to diverse age groups and educational levels positively and professionally.

Special Events Assistant

Summary: The Special Events Assistant assists museum staff and volunteers with the execution of the museum’s many fun and exciting special events, such as Murder Mystery Night, Wine & Dinos, Oyster Fest, and more!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the setup, breakdown, and clean-up of special events.
  • Greet and welcome guests and help guide guests through the museum.
  • Assist with activities within the special event, such as arts and crafts tables, science kit demonstrations, and more.
  • Enforce safety rules and assist with guest safety.

Relevant Skills:

  • Knowledge and/or interest in nature and science.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a variety of settings and with the general public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to relate to diverse age groups and educational levels positively and professionally.
