Emergency Transport Volunteer | Racine & Kenosha

The Emergency Transport Volunteer provides transportation for injured, potentially critically, stray animals who require emergency veterinary care after-hours at our Racine and Kenosha Campuses.

 

Objective

To provide transportation for stray animals who require after-hours veterinary care when the local emergency facility is unavailable.

 

Position context

With the national veterinary shortage, some of our after-hours emergency veterinary partners reduced service hours, which creates a gap in care and service for animals who need that care after traditional business hours. The animals who most often need transport are stray animals who are injured or need stabilizing support until they can be transferred to a WHS campus the following business day or reunited with their families. To ensure these animals continue to receive the care they need, we’re looking for volunteers who are willing to be on-call and provide transport for these critical cases to the nearest open emergency veterinary partner.

Volunteer requirements Volunteers must:

· Be at least 18 years old.

· Have access to a reliable vehicle that can accommodate a large kennel cab for safe transport.

· Have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

· Be willing to drive in all weather conditions.

· Have reliable access to a cell phone that can receive text messages.

· Be available during typical coverage timeframes below. Support may be needed outside of these times.

o Typical coverage timeframes:

§ Fridays: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

§ Saturdays: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

§ Sundays: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

· Be able to navigate from WHS campuses to the nearest open emergency veterinary facility.

 

Duties

· Meet law enforcement officers at the WHS campus or emergency clinic.

· When needed, help load the animal into vehicle.

· Complete and collect the WHS stray intake form to gather information that will help to treat the animal and reunite them with their family.

· Drive the animal to the closest open emergency center and provide veterinary hospital staff with a copy of the stray intake form, which allows them to support the animal per the partnership agreement with WHS.

 

Skills and equipment required:

· A commitment to our mission, values, and people-centered philosophy.

· An ability to safely lift and load animals of various sizes into a vehicle for transport.

· Consistent, objective, and reliable communication.

· Access to personal vehicle and cell phone.

    · Meet & greet with Volunteer Coordinator (30min)

    · Volunteer handbook and waivers – Online training (15min)

    · Animal handling training – Online training videos (2hrs)

    · People-centered philosophy – Online training (25min)

    · One-on-one training with campus Director of Animal and Client Services or delegate
