Hear from some of our current Volunteers as they share why they choose to give their gift of time and talent at CMC:
"I volunteer in Guest Services at Atrium Main to help create a welcoming and comforting environment for our patients and their families. It provides me an opportunity to support people during stressful times and make their visit a little easier. Being part of our compassionate and capable healthcare team at Atrium is deeply rewarding and meaningful for me and I always feel valued as a volunteer."
-Debbie Davis, CMC Guest Services Ambassador Volunteer
"I volunteer at CMC because I have always been interested in heart procedures. My father, brother and I have had successful heart surgeries. This is my way of paying it forward. I enjoy volunteering because you were kind enough to place me in the cardiac catheterization department where I could interact with the professionals that improve patients' lives. The department also encourages me to interact with the patients to reduce their anxiety, when possible. They see how well I am doing, and it seems to help."
-Rick Carpenter, CMC Cardiac Care Volunteer

Atrium Carolinas Medical Center is distinguished throughout the Southeastern United States for its excellent patient care and medical expertise.
From modest beginnings in 1943, we have evolved into the largest hospital in the region and a world-class facility that offers a full range of services to the Charlotte community and beyond, with more than 1,100 physicians and providers specializing in all areas of medicine.
CMC serves as the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and is an approved transplant center for heart, kidney, pancreas and liver. We also serve as one of North Carolina’s 5 Academic Medical Center Teaching Hospitals, providing residency training for more than 200 physicians in 15 specialties and serve as a regional campus for Wake Forest University School of Medicine, based in Winston-Salem, NC.
Virtual volunteers can work remote from home while still providing meaningful support for our patients through a variety of programs. The Concierge Admission Program supports newly admitted patients with a phone call from a virtual volunteer to discuss their stay, identify any needs they may have while with us and assist with concerns. Volunteers call patients from home to any one of our hospitals. Virtual volunteers can also serve as remote witnesses for patients who need an advance directive for care and assist with hospitalized patients during elections to provide guidance on how they can vote using a proxy. Many more virtual experiences are being developed thanks to our wonderful virtual volunteers!

Ambassadors welcome and escort patients and visitors throughout the hospital making them feel welcome and safe. You are helping to set the stage for a successful visit at Carolinas Medical Center and you may be the last impression as they leave. This is a powerful role to help ensure our patients and visitors do not worry about where or how they get to their destination within our facilities. You help reduce that anxiety so they can focus on their healing journey.

Be the face of the department as your welcome patients and visitors and assist them to get settled and prepared for their appointment. Volunteers play a key role in decreasing patient anxiety by providing a warm and welcoming approach focused on setting the stage for a successful visit. Volunteers also help patients' loved ones adjust and provide constant communication to them in areas where procedures or day surgeries may be taking place. Our goal is to provide that caring and emotionally supportive environment for the department.

Volunteers do amazing work behind the scenes to help many departments with special projects such as creating patient education packets, stocking items, or assisting the Volunteer Services staff. We'll help you find the right project work that interests you!

Volunteers in this role provide fun, creative outlets and positive distractions for patients to help them fight boredom, stay positive, and find joy during their hospital stay. Volunteers offer books, cards, puzzles and more by bringing activity carts to nursing units. Volunteers also organize enrichment activities such as craft projects and games for our patients and families. It is an energizing and fun role to interact in a meaningful way with patients!

We have a variety of volunteer roles focused on supporting patients and nursing teams. Our goal is to ensure every patient has the support they need during their stay and an excellent patient experience. Volunteers visit assigned patients regularly and use active listening skills to check in on their needs and provide emotional support. We also have volunteers who visit with hospitality carts to uplift their spirits.

Pet handlers and their certified therapy dogs interact with patients, families, and teammates to help reduce stress and anxiety. They offer comfort and a sense of calm that promotes healthy healing. All dogs must be certified for animal assisted (pet) therapy and be up to date on vaccinations. They are beloved by all!
