Volunteer with a person with a disability. Volunteers support our clients socially and enable them to access greater opportunities within the community and build lasting friendships. disAbility living Inc. has provided support and accommodation to people with disabilities in South Australia for over 30 years. We believe in the inherent right of people with disabilities to have choice and control over their lives and support their right to be active citizens enabling them to participate fully in the community. Volunteers support our clients socially and enable them to access greater opportunities within the community and build lasting friendships. We use a person-centred approach to matching volunteers to clients, roles and programs, ensuring common interests are at the heart of the relationship. Our Volunteers and staff are the beating heart of disAbility Living and their professionalism, energy, passion, and knowledge ensures we deliver services to the highest standards. disAbility Living recognises the value that volunteers bring to its activities, programs and services and seeks to provide a rewarding and enjoyable personal experience for all of those volunteering their time with us.

Key responsibilities will be dependent on the activity, however, could include: Assisting participants to engage in activities. Assisting participants to practice new skills and role modeling new skills. Actively joining in the activities. Role modeling good social and communication skills. Facilitating social interactions between participants to assist in fostering new and lasting friendships. Assisting with participant supervision. Preparation of activity, program or venue including: shopping, preparing or cooking meals and setting up or packing up activities and venues. Supporting client’s under the direction of disAbility Living staff. Other roles relevant to a specific activity or participant will be discussed prior to the program.

The Social Engagement Facilitator provides extra support on group programs by focusing on social connectedness and supporting people with a disability to engage in the community, the activity and each other. |

Accommodation based mentoring matches a volunteer with residents with a disability in one or more of our accommodation sites. Mentors are matched with sites based on shared interests with residents. |
Key responsibilities include: Spending regular time with your participant(s) doing activities that you both enjoy. Supporting participant(s) to actively engage in activities of interest to them as well as trying new activities. Supporting participants (where appropriate) to develop or work on life skills, such as cooking or gardening. Role modeling good social communication and behaviour to assist your mentee to develop social skills. Fostering a genuine friendship with participants. Advocating for the right and choices of the participant(s). Other roles relevant to a specific activity or participant will be discussed prior to starting. Always operate under the direction and supervision of disAbility Living staff and follow reasonable directions and instructions.

The Mentoring Program matches a child or an adult with a disAbility with a volunteer on a 1:1 ratio to encourage mentees to engage in their community. The focus is on having fun, exploring new activities and places and meeting new people, whilst developing social and life skills and greater independence. |
Key responsibilities include: Spending regular time with your participant, getting involved in the community and participating in activities that you both enjoy. Supporting your mentee to actively engage in the local community and try new activities. Role modeling good social communication and behaviour to assist your mentee to develop social skills. Fostering a genuine and lasting friendship with the mentee and their family. Advocating for the right and choices of the participant. Ensuring the health and safety of you and your mentee. The aim of the Life Story Scribe is to provide our client with the opportunity to create and bring to life her memoirs. She is a retired journalist with a passion for writing and wants her story heard, however she has limited ability to achieve this herself. Therefore we are looking for a compassionate and patient person with journalism knowledge to help her achieve her memoir dream.
Key responsibilities include:

Tailored programs and activities are tailored to suit the passion and skill of the volunteer. This could include delivering or assisting with programs or activities based on client interests, such as music, art, cooking, gardening, pet care and general handy man projects.
