Palliative Care Companion

The Palliative Care Unit is a very specialized and complex Unit.  It requires sensitivity, maturity, reliability and good communication skills.  Volunteers will be with patients who are living with a life-limiting illness and their families to provide an atmosphere of caring and support. If volunteers have experienced a loss, it must be at least one year prior to volunteering on the Unit.

Volunteers will listen to or converse with patients and families, or just be with them in silence; read to patients, write letters, listen to music, arrange for videos or games;take patients for walks around the Unit, provide respite for families; provide vigil for patients; assist with any special requests.

Assignments are Monday to Sunday 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Volunteers must attend a four hour Palliative Care Training session.   A minimum six months commitment is required.
