Volunteer purpose and impact
We are searching for those who are multilingual to assist with interpretation, program intakes, recruitment, and scheduling and who can provide consecutive in-person and over-the-phone interpretation between English and native languages of refugee clients.
We are particularly in need of the following languages: Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Farsi, French, Kinyarwanda, Kunama, Lingala, Nepali, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, and Tigrinya.
Responsibilities and key deliverables
- Interpret in a professional manner
- Be on time for scheduled interpretation dates
- Call refugee clients from the Refugee Focus office to invite clients to classes and meetings
- Interpret for classes such as: cultural orientation, employment orientation, bus training, meetings with case managers and employment specialists, library tours, etc.
Qualifications
Must fluently speak a second language. Prior experience interpreting is preferred. Must complete interpreter test and training with the Training and Interpreter Coordinator before beginning.
Working conditions
Majority of hours will be completed at the Refugee Focus office in Central Phoenix, some hours may be completed in the community and on field trips.
Clearances required & training
Volunteers must pass background checks and security clearances. Volunteers with level one Fingerprint Clearance preferred.
Location & timeframe
Volunteer should be willing to be available consistent weekly hours (5-10 hours) for scheduling purposes.
