The Salvation Army - Evansville

The Salvation Army's food pantry is vital to alleviating food insecurity around our neighborhood and communities in the counties we serve. As the second-largest TEFAP food pantry in the area and a partner with TSFB, we serve over 500 households every month.

Our pantry occurs weekly on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Observes federal holidays) and serves families from 1:15-3:15p. We ask that Volunteers arrive by 12:45p to allow final preparations before serving. Lastly, some volunteers might need to stay until 3:30 to finish final orders after a busy day.

• 12:45 - Arrival - Volunteers arrive and receive training if needed.
• 12:45-1:15 - Final Preparations - Volunteers stock shelves, set cold food items, and prepare bagging area
• 1:15-3:15 - Serving Guests - Actively filling orders and helping clients

Volunteers are needed to perform a variety of the following tasks during each food pantry

• Stock shelves
  • Sometimes not enough volunteers or community service were available earlier in the day to fully stock the pantry shelves. Volunteers may need to stock shelves during final preparation.
• Select food items from the guest's shopping list (Wednesdays)
  • On Wednesday we allow families to complete "shopping lists" of items we have available on the shelves for them. After completing the list volunteers gather the selected food items to complete the guest's order and proceed to bagging.
• Help clients select food items as an assistant shopper ("choice shop" days, Monday and Thursday)
  • We allow families to shop for their items from a provided shopping card on choice shopping days. This allows families to see and touch the food items available and allow them more choice in the process. Volunteers become assistant shoppers to help the guests from start to finish
• Bag groceries
  • As food orders are completed, or guests finish shopping baggers are needed to bag the food items and prepare their food order for the guest's vehicle/car share/other transportation
