Adult Education Tutoring Program
Volunteers offer free tutoring support to help people learn conversational English, develop basic literacy skills, and prepare for the GED and U.S. Naturalization (civics) tests. Librarians provide training for tutors and the learning materials for tutoring ESOL and adult basic education learners.
The Adult Education Tutoring Program is offered at the Broadview Branch on Saturdays, the Lake City Branch on Saturdays, and at the Rainier Beach Branch on Thursdays. Available opportunities are listed below.
Adult Tutors must have a personal commitment to cultural humility when interacting with library patrons, staff and volunteers. Cultural humility is a lifelong process of self-awareness and reflection whereby the individual not only learns about another person’s culture and values, but understands their own cultural identity, values, assumptions and biases. New volunteers will be asked to complete our Equity, Race and Social Justice at The Seattle Public Library online course during their orientation process.
