Volunteer with St Barnabas
As a local charity, we rely on the support and dedication of volunteers to help us provide vital care and support to our patients and their families.
There are so many ways to get involved with St Barnabas across Lincolnshire, no matter your age or experience.
You could help in one of our charity shops – sorting donations, putting items on the shop floor, operating the till, helping with their social media channels, visual merchandiser, secret shopper or Lead Volunteer, running the shop!
You could help with our fundraising events throughout the year, distributing collection boxes, supporting with thank you calls to donors or as ambassadors giving thank yous and accepting cheque donations.
You could support patients and their families in our Inpatient Units, helping on the ward, reception, kitchen or garden. In our Wellbeing Centres across the county, we have volunteer led groups including creative wellbeing, knit & natter and coffee mornings.
We have opportunities for admin, IT, training and recruitment across various teams too.
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. Anyone over the age of 14* can volunteer, and it is a great way to meet new people, build new skills for your CV, utilise life experience and to help make a difference to your local community! We will also be able to reimburse you for commuting costs so volunteering doesn't cost you.

We have 24 shops across Lincolnshire including a Coffee Shop in Lincoln Magistrates Court. Volunteer roles include:
General Retail, Social Media, Mystery Shopper, and helping to run a shop as Lead Volunteer! Volunteering starts from age 14+ in most shops.
We also have opportunities for Volunteer Van Drivers aged 25+ from our Lincoln Warehouse and Drivers Mate Volunteers aged 18+ to help with logistics between shops and delivery to customers homes.
You will have the opportunity to merchandise attractive displays, sort donations, use the till and work as part of a committed team of volunteers helping to raise the funds that allow us to offer the excellent specialist palliative and end of life care that we are known and celebrated for.

St.Barnabas has two Inpatient Units, one on Nettleham Road in Lincoln and one in Grantham Hospital. Roles in these units include Volunteering on the Ward with patients, covering reception, gardening & Kitchen support. You would support the nursing and kitchen staff in meeting the needs of patients and carers. You would complete nutritional diaries, maintain fresh drinking water and serve meals and drinks.
You would have direct interaction with patients, carers and family members on the unit, offering a listening ear during patient stays.
Due to the level of training required, a minimum of 12 months commitment to this role with at least one shift per fortnight is expected. Volunteers must be aged 16+
Fundraising happens all over Lincolnshire. You will help raise funds through a variety of events and initiatives including working with schools, local fundraising groups and attending our Hospice led events.
There will be a variety of roles to suit your interests that will help us to deliver outstanding events, such as assisting with event set up/clear down, preparing resources for events, selling merchandise, registration of participants, stewarding, helping with refreshments and other tasks depending on the event; all of which will make a real difference to us!
With Coffee Mornings at our Wellbeing Hubs in Lincoln, Boston, Louth, Grantham, Spalding and Gainsborough ; you will find a role welcoming patients and carers into the hub, helping them to feel at ease and comfortable in the environment. You will offer a listening ear during visits and signpost on where they can find and access information on other hospice services. You will help to provide refreshments to people attending and facilitate their visits to our services.
Creative Wellbeing Groups run from our Lincoln, Louth, Grantham and Boston hubs. If you have an artistic flair for art and craft related mediums and would like to support the groups, please get in touch.
Knit & Natter groups are now running in our centres, supporting people with hand crafts and offering supportive conversations.
Our Volunteer Gardeners support our Louth and Lincoln hubs. Louth on a Monday and Lincoln on a Thursday. If you would like to join one of these teams and bring out blooming marvellous results, contact us.
Our Wellbeing Team roles consist of trained and trainee Counsellors and Bereavement Group Volunteers. It also includes the BEAM Cafe in Boston.
Spiritual Wellbeing Volunteers also help to support patients and their families at our Inpatient Units in Lincoln & Grantham

Education Actor Volunteer -
Supporting the Education Team in the delivery of practical training on aspects of health care courses. Examples are wound care and First Aid. This training may be delivered to Hospice staff, Volunteers or outside agencies within Lincolnshire. In this role, you will play the part of a patient, and you may have wound make up applied to support the realism of the training exercises.
Education Admin Volunteer -
Supporting the Education Team with administrative tasks connected with practice placements for medical and health care students and with supporting tasks related to general education administration including the Blue stream training platform used by Hospice staff and Volunteers. This role is flexible throughout the normal working week, primarily based at our Hawthorn Road site in Lincoln. Opportunities may be available to work remotely with the addition of supporting meetings as a minute taker. This role is vital in ensuring accurate training information and supporting a positive placement experience for students. You will be assisting the Education Team to facilitate training related to outstanding health care across the county.
Education Training Volunteer -
Supporting the Education Team in the face to face delivery of a wide array of training courses, to Hospice staff, Volunteers and third party agencies. This role is flexible, depending on your skills and may be as an assistant supporting the training delivery. Training sessions can take place in locations across Lincolnshire, so access to independent travel would be an advantage. Reimbursement for all such travel is available.
Intranet Content Volunteer -
Supporting the Human Resources Team with internal staff engagement. You will help to create and update the staff intranet page based on the Sharepoint platform. Content will include information around wellbeing initiatives and how staff can access these. Content may also include organisational updates and information. This role would be suitable for someone with a working knowledge of SharePoint, or as a minimum, good IT knowledge and the use of Microsoft software
Engagement & Recruitment Volunteer -
Supporting the Volunteer Services, Human Resources and Education Teams in preplanned attendance at informational and educational sessions across Lincolnshire. You will help to raise awareness of the diverse range of volunteer opportunities, paid vacancies, work experience and educational placements within all areas of Hospice activities. For most of the time, you will be attending these events with another member of one of these teams but there may be opportunity to do events on your own where appropriate.
