Flight of the Monarch

The Flight of the Monarch celebrates the annual migration of the monarch butterfly.  This FREE event is a family event with live music, Butterfly Releases at 12:00pm-2:00pm-4:00pm, Kite Flying, Bumper Boats, Costume Contest, Arts & Crafts, Food, a KID ZONE, and so much more!

General Administrative Help

Parks, Arts & Recreation welcomes volunteers throughout the year to come in and assist with general administrative tasks in preparation for major events.  Schedule is flexible during regular office hours, Mondays through Fridays, 8 AM - 5 PM.

Hatch Chile Fest

Get your hot roasted Hatch chiles at Grand Prairie Farmers Market’s annual Hatch Chile Festival on Saturday, August 19th! Join us for live music, food, and much more! Also, shop the market’s fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, coffee, tea, tamales, jellies and relishes, grass-fed meats, homemade soaps, candles and more.

Have a very Prairie Christmas in downtown Grand Prairie with our annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, hosted by the City of Grand Prairie and Grand Prairie Independent School District. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m., with choir performances, photos with Santa and the lighting of the Christmas tree!

Kid's Fishing Day

Come reel ‘em in on Saturday, October 7 at the Mike Lewis Park lagoon. This popular event is FREE to children 16 and under. The lagoon will be stocked with catfish and ribbons will be handed out to each participant. There is no registration fee to participate in the Kid’s Fishing Day, but there will be an on-site sign-up table. A limited number of loaner rods and reels will be available on a first come first serve basis with a driver’s license or credit card deposit. Registration is from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on October 7, 2017.

Current high school volunteers are invited to sign up for this event. Volunteer assignments include, but are not limited to, helping with registration and rod rental, handing out bait, and keeping measurement's of fish caught.

Prairie Lights

The 2017 annual Prairie Lights event is a 2-mile, 4-million-light, Holiday Light Drive-Thru park. Midway is Holiday Village area with FREE carnival rides, food, photos with Santa, Souvenir Gift Shop and purchase tickets to two special attractions, a Holiday Walk-Thru Lighted Forest and a laser show in the Holiday Magic Theater.

We prefer you signup by group or organization.  No more than 12 people in a group. The minimum age to volunteer is 15.

Prairie Lights Setup and Decorating

Be a part of transforming Lynn Creek Park into the 2017 Annual Prairie Lights wonderland!  Help with gift wrapping, stringing up lights, and decorating.  Individual and group volunteers are welcome! 

Volunteer shifts are available October 3 - November 4, Mondays - Fridays, from 8:00-4:00.

Be the first to see all new displays at the 2017 Prairie Lights as you run, jog, walk or stroll through the lighted park. November 18th will be dedicated for runners, joggers and fast walkers. November 19th is set aside for those who want to walk and stroll through the lights. Registration is limited to the first 1250 participants each night. Early registration is preferred, but on-site registration will be accepted.

Join us Sunday, October 22, 2017 where the City of Grand Prairie Parks, Arts and Recreation Department, Run Project and the PlayGrand Adventures Committee will be hosting That DAM Half & 5K, to help raise funds for the first all-inclusive playground, PlayGrand Adventures. Enjoy one of the most scenic runs in the metroplex at the best time of the year for running in Texas! 5K participants will receive a long sleeve, pullover and finisher medal. Half marathoners will receive a 13.1 long sleeve pullover, a unique finisher medal and a 13.1 sticker. For event information and registration details, please visit
