What is Home Care?

Home Care is a health service that supports wellness and independence. The goal is to help clients remain safe and independent in their own homes or care settings for as long as possible. Alberta’s Home Care Program supports Albertan's of all ages and includes an array of services including health promotion and teaching, treatments, care at end of life, rehabilitation, home support and maintenance, assistance to maintain social connections, and support for caregivers.

Volunteer Resources in Home Care

We want to decrease the social isolation of clients in order to increase their quality of life. We strive to provide an enriching experience for volunteers while assisting clients in maintaining independence and continuing to live in the community.

Volunteer positions are available for volunteers who generally have daytime availability Mondays to Fridays. Some clients may prefer weekend or evening visits; this can be discussed with the Coordinator of Volunteer Resources during your volunteer interview.

Volunteer Onboarding Process

Volunteers for AHS Home Care should be 18 years of age or older due to the independent nature of our program, and hence to reduce liability for all parties involved.  Upon receipt of your application on this page, the Coordinator for your area will contact you for an interview.  You will be asked to provide the contact information for three references and to obtain a criminal record/vulnerable sector check. The check must be clear to be able to volunteer with our program. The cost of the check can be reimbursed with a valid receipt.

Once these paperwork pieces are complete, volunteers are invited to attend an orientation and training session with their Coordinator.  All volunteers are issued an ID badge for their position; a photo will be taken at the orientation session for this purpose.

At orientation:

Volunteers are required to complete a Communicable Disease Assessment form, which will be reviewed by a WHS nurse who would contact you directly should more information, such as immunization records be required.

A confidentiality agreement that outlines policies for safeguarding sensitive information for AHS clients, staff and volunteers must also be signed by new volunteers, and every three years thereafter.

If a volunteer wishes to be a registered driver with our program, a clear five-year drivers abstract and drivers addendum must be provided, as well as proof of insurance on a yearly basis. The cost of the drivers abstract can be reimbursed with a valid receipt.

Once all pieces are in place, and the ID badge has been issued, you will be ready to be matched with a wonderful Home Care client in your area.
