Volunteers Needed for Minneapolis Reader/Writer Program

The Reader/Writer program supports the literacy development of middle and early high school students (7^th-12^th grade) in the Minneapolis Public Schools. This academic year, teachers and students from four Minneapolis schools will be participating in the Reader/Writer program including:

• Sanford Middle School (Southeast)
• Justice Page Middle School
• Franklin Middle School
• Southwest High School

Details of volunteer activities:

Volunteers will read, edit, and comment on student writing.

• Volunteers are paired with a student to read, lightly edit, and respond to the content of student writing completed in English classes.
• Student writing is mailed, typically on a bi-weekly basis, to volunteers.
• Volunteers will return edited work and typed comments in provided, self-addressed, stamped envelopes.
• Volunteer editing and response typically take 20 minutes to an hour, twice a month from October - May.

Volunteer eligibility and training requirements:

• Basic writing proficiency
• A desire to connect with and learn from youths
• An open heart and mind to honest student self-expression
• Be able to attend a 30-minute Zoom training session
