With its world-class auditorium seating more than one thousand music lovers, the Ted Mann Concert Hall, under the auspices of the UMN School of Music, provides a concert venue for performances of student ensembles as well as visiting musicians and local organizations. Ted Mann volunteers usher for, and enjoy, School of Music concerts and opera, and non-University performance events such as Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus, jazz, dance competitions, ballets, school festivals, and other quality musical events.
Description of volunteer duties: Volunteer ushers are expected to work at least one shift monthly. They are assigned to usher inside the hall and, if they wish to remain, are seated to enjoy the performance.
Dates, times, and locations: Ted Mann Concert Hall, 2128 South 4th St, Mpls., is the location for most shifts.
Most event shifts are 3 to 4 hours. Shifts start 1½ hours before the performance. Some shifts for all day events are split into two longer shifts; however, volunteer ushers may work the whole day if they choose.
Volunteer eligibility and training requirements: New volunteers must attend an initial training hosted by the Audience Services Manager. All volunteers will attend the annual emergency/refresher training session.
The next training sessions take place at the Ted Mann Concert Hall on the following dates:
- Monday, August 31, @ 5:30 – 8:30pm
- Monday, Sept. 14, @ 5:30 – 8:30pm
Parking/Transportation: Parking is free for training and volunteer ushering. Closest parking is available in the 21st street ramp. For ushering events, volunteers will receive a free parking voucher from the Audience Services Manager by email for each performance they accept. Volunteers must bring their parking ticket with them to the training event so the Audience Services Manager can validate the parking before volunteers leave.
