Usher/Greeter/Guide - Ted Mann Concert Hall - Usher
Ted Mann Concert Hall
Ushering
With its world-class auditorium seating more than one thousand music lovers, the Ted Mann Concert Hall, under the auspices of the UMN School of Music, provides a concert venue for performances of student ensembles as well as visiting musicians and local organizations. Ted Mann volunteers usher for, and enjoy, School of Music concerts and opera, and non-University performance events such as Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus, dance competitions, ballets, school festivals, and other quality musical events.
Description of volunteer duties: Volunteer ushers are expected to work at least one shift monthly. They are assigned to usher inside the hall and, if they wish to remain, are seated to enjoy the performance.
Dates, times, and locations: Ted Mann Concert Hall, 2128 South 4th St, Mpls., is the location for most shifts. (Occasionally, Ted Mann ushers will help with events in adjacent Ferguson Hall, but all ushers will still start and end shifts in Ted Mann.)
Most event shifts are 3 to 4 hours. Shifts start 1 ½ hours before the performance. Some shifts for all day events are split into 6-hour shifts; however, volunteer ushers may work the whole day if they choose.
Volunteer eligibility and training requirements: Volunteers must attend an initial training hosted by the Audience Services Manager, as well as attend an annual emergency/ refresher training, typically held in late summer. These training sessions may be combined.
Physical expectations/limitations: Ushers are expected to be able to stand for extended periods. Accommodations may be made on a case-by-case basis. Questions about such accommodation should be directed to the Audience Services Manager, Ben Eng, at: tmchhm@umn.edu.
What to wear: Black button-down dress shirt, black dress pants, black socks, and black dress shoes.
Parking/Transportation: Parking is available in the 21st street ramp.
For ushering events volunteers will receive a free parking voucher from the Audience Services Manager by email for each performance they accept.
Event Schedule:
- Prospective ushers attend the training session.
- Each month the Audience Services Manager will email ushers a Google form with a listing of programs from which volunteers will then select their event schedule shift availability. These selections will then be confirmed by the Audience Services Manager.
- Ushering for at least one shift per month is expected, two programs monthly is preferred
Volunteers' food/beverage availability: Covered, non-alcoholic, beverages are allowed in the Concert Hall, but food is not allowed. If an usher wishes to eat something they may speak to the house manager on duty to arrange a quick break in the HM office to eat before or after their shift.
