Small Animal Care Volunteer

 

Small Animal Care Volunteers (SA-ACVs) help with cleaning and sanitizing small animal kennels/suites and deep cleaning empty kennels in preparation for another animal. ACVs will typically complete daily cleaning for a variety of small animals throughout our building. ACVs will also assist with feeding small animals’ daily diets.  

 

Duties:

  • Clean and effectively sanitize animal kennels.
  • Set up kennels for use by another animal.
  • Feed animals’ daily diet as instructed by shelter staff.
  • Restock and organize necessary supplies as needed.

 

Skills Needed 

Volunteers must be detail-oriented and committed to reducing the chances of disease transmission. This is a physical position and volunteers must be comfortable walking, bending, squatting, scrubbing, and moving cleaning equipment from one area to another for the duration of the shift. Volunteers must be able to follow directions, read, write, and effectively communicate with staff and other volunteers. Volunteers in this role will need to feel comfortable handling small animals and reading small animal body language. Typical small animals we tend to are rabbits and guinea pigs, but you must be comfortable with all varieties of small animals including reptiles and birds.

Commitment/Age Requirement

A minimum of a 6-month commitment is required.

Must be 16 years or older to volunteer solo, 13–15-year-olds can volunteer with an adult

 

Shifts:

Typical shifts are from 8:30am-10:30am.
