CFC Volunteer Trips - 11) FlowPer Extravaganza

Project: FlowPer Extravaganza

Date: August 17-18, 2024 (10:00 am Saturday - 3:00 pm Sunday)

Location: Cowlitz Valley Ranger District

Trip leader: Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator

Trip description: FLOwPER stands for flow permanence, which is a way to measure the persistence of water flow in a stream throughout the year.

The FLOwPER Database is a publicly accessible dataset that helps with research and management related to streams. Mapping streams accurately, adding to this database, and determining water flows at different times of the year are crucial for understanding, protecting, and managing aquatic systems.

That’s why the Forest Service and USGS want volunteers like you to lend a hand in studying streams. The hope is to use the power of crowdsourcing to collect many observations from a wide geographical range throughout the year, especially in the low flow phases of summer. Recording FLOwPER data is straightforward - it involves quickly making simple visual observations.

This trip will be a self-directed, independent trip where you will be heading out with a group of your own choosing, BUT all groups will be out in the field over the same weekend, and we will coordinate survey locations beforehand.

Here's how it works:

  • Form a survey group (2+ people recommended) and sign up for this trip.
  • A map of survey zones will be sent in April for you to adopt an area(s) to survey.
  • On the morning of August 17th, we will meet at Relevent Coffee in Vancouver, WA, for orientation and equipment distribution.
  • Afterward, you’ll head to the forest to visit stream locations, camp overnight, and wrap up surveys on Sunday morning.
  • Return survey gear to CFC's office in Vancouver, WA, on Sunday afternoon.

Task: Choosing stream locations you’d like to visit, then travel to the creek to collect data

Trip difficulty: 3 out of 5 ||  This level of trip difficulty is chosen by you! Choose streams of interest that are easily accessible by car or hike to remote stream locations.
