Community Court Volunteer Intern

This is an unpaid internship opportunity.

The City of Arlington is offering an internship opportunity in the Judiciary, specifically in assisting the Community Court. This department works with others to administer justice. This internship will be specifically working with the Community Court program, as well as a limited number of juveniles. Instead of payment, community court allows defendants charged with low-level misdemeanors meaningful alternatives to payment to resolve their class c citations such as counseling, job placement, and education opportunities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Licensed counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, LCSWs or students working under the direct supervision of a licensed, trained provider of mental health services may provide individual or group counseling services to individuals enrolled in the community court program
  • Assisting with attending community outreach events to promote the work of the Arlington Community Court
  • Assisting with Information Sessions and Community Service events including making sure that participants log into and out of sessions, distributing and collecting questionnaires and surveys, and assisting with set-up and take-down of presentation material/audio-visual equipment
  • Talking with potential participants about community court
  • Preparing flyers, hard copy and email notices, and other documents for mail-out/distribution
  • Assisting with data entry for eligible and non-eligible participants
  • Updating participant data after dockets
  • Calling Defendants prior to dockets for reminder about upcoming comm. court session

 

Goals:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system.
  • Gain  insight into the interplay between the court and social service agencies
  • Participate in restorative justice practice

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Orientation Day
  • Currently enrolled in MSW, BSW, or Masters of Counseling Program
  • Counseling experience (preferred)

 

Additional Information

  • Time will be split between 401 West Sanford Street, Suite 2600 Arlington, Texas 76011 and the primary campus location of 211 South Cooper Street, Building A, Arlington, TX 76010.
  • Class credit will be provided. 
  •  400-500 hours per semester
