City of Burnaby - Eco-sculptures

Since 2004, Burnaby’s Eco-Sculptures program has been a unique hallmark of our city, providing living art to our parks which has been delighting residents and visitors of all ages for over 20 years. Eco-Sculptures start with a metal frame, which is then packed with soil. Each spring, our volunteers plant this frame with appropriate plants to grow and fill in during the warmer months- the finished product is a vibrant, imaginative living sculpture. The plants we select for our sculptures are chosen for their colours and textures to create memorable designs which reflect the personality and artistic intention of the artists and volunteers who planted them.

PLANTING EVENT OPPORTUNITY

We are very excited to have the community join us in planting many of our 40+ Eco-Sculptures every year. Our planting sessions are a great opportunity for individuals, families, groups and schools to come together to meet new friends, do something creative, get a little exercise, and reconnect with the experience of getting their hands dirty.

We will be holding planting sessions on Saturdays in April, running two sessions a day at a maximum capacity of 20 people per session.

Volunteer Opportunities

Winter Lights 2024 Volunteers

Winter Lights is a way to extend the life of our Eco-Sculptures beyond the summer season.  This year we are looking for 5 volunteers over 3 days to help us dress up our sculptures and are looking to you, our previous volunteers for help.

Please Note:  this format will be different than our spring planting events.  This is more task-oriented work and are looking for volunteers that are capable of volunteering for 3-5 hours each day, and can sustain themselves for that length of time.  If you have volunteered for Burnaby Blooms then you will have an idea of the type of tasks and stamina we are looking for!

TASKS:

  • green up sculptures with natural product (fir, cedar etc)
  • assist in painting material such as pinecones
  • clean, organize materials
  • assist staff in creating sculptures

ABILITIES:

  • Can stand on their feet for a few hours at a time
  • have dexterity and strength in their hands for handling fine materials such as pins etc
  • Can work with some direction and semi-independently.
  • Can handle weather and temperature variances (we will be in a covered area with heat, but its not perfect!)
  • Some experience is appreciated

If you think this is something that sounds appealing to you please consider signing up for a shift or two (or 3!).  It is not necessary to be available every day, but priority will be given to those that can do multiple days.  All tools and safety equipment will be provided.

Please reach out for further information or if you have any questions!

Sincerely,

Eco-Sculpture Team

Mission Statement

Our Eco-Sculptures program was created to offer a unique attraction for residents and visitors of Burnaby. These living sculptures draw attention to the challenges faced by the wildlife we share our city with, encouraging us to do our part in protecting their environment and giving a nod to the rich history of our city's cultural past.
