Current Volunteer Opportunities / Oportunidades actuales

Math GED Tutor at Rockwood Library

Are you good at math? Do you want to support adult learners in reaching their goals? Partner with an adult(s) studying for the GED math test through in-person tutoring sessions! During a 2-hour weekly shift, volunteers will meet with learners individually or in small groups at Rockwood Library. Study materials will be provided.

Location: Rockwood Library, 17917 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97233

Time commitment: Drop-in tutoring sessions take place on Wednesdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, September 25 - December 18, 2024. 

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Meet with learners individually or in small groups at Rockwood Library during the weekly GED drop-in sessions. Group size depends on who comes in that day.
  • Engage learners using open-ended questions to determine their specific needs and goals.
  • Review study materials that are brought in by learners.
  • Answer questions and provide guidance on passing the math section of the GED test. 
  • Connect with students one-on-one on an ongoing basis when they are able to come weekly.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years or older
  • Proficiency in basic math, including geometry, algebra, graphs, and functions
  • Teaching or tutoring experience preferred but not required
  • Empathy and a friendly demeanor
  • Patience, flexibility, and creativity
  • Commitment to help individuals reach personal educational goals
  • Willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with students
  • Respects diversity and appreciates diverse learning abilities
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with other volunteers and staff
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to volunteering.
