Current Volunteer Opportunities / Oportunidades actuales

GED tutor at Rockwood Library (in-person)

Partner with an adult studying for the GED test through in-person tutoring sessions. Start dates are flexible and our Adult Literacy team will match you with a learner and provide training.

We are especially looking for people who:

  • Want to work with adults learning studying for the GED exam
  • Able to volunteer in person at Rockwood Library
  • Are 18 years or older and willing to submit to a criminal record check (paid for by the library)
  • Can commit to volunteering 30-90 minute tutoring sessions each week for at least 6 months
  • Volunteers need for Wednesdays 10am-12pm, but other schedules available

Talk Time for Beginners Facilitator (online)

Virtual Talk Time for Beginners is an opportunity for English learners to practice new vocabulary and other beginning English skills. English learners work in small groups with a volunteer tutor to practice these skills in a safe, supportive environment.  

Patient, flexible and creative volunteers will help English language learners develop speaking and listening skills using learning activities of their own finding or creation (library staff can also provide learning activity suggestions).

Talk Time for Beginners meets Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 pm on Zoom. Experience using Zoom is helpful but not required. Library staff are available for Zoom instruction and support as needed.

Time Commitment: 1 hour per week for 6 months

Available Shifts: Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 pm 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • 18 years or older and willing to submit to a criminal record check (paid for by the library)
  • Experience working with English language learners is preferred, but not required. 
  • Experience facilitating small groups is preferred, but not required.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Meet with learners in small groups using Zoom
  • Help learners develop English speaking and listening skills
  • Volunteers are encouraged to bring prepared activities to the program to help the English learners improve their language skills

  • Have experience teaching or tutoring math or English
  • Have experience with ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
  • Able to volunteer in person at Rockwood, Gresham or St. Johns Libraries
  • Are 18 years or older and willing to submit to a criminal record check (paid for by the library)
  • Can commit to volunteering 30-90 minute tutoring sessions each week for at least 6 months

Voluntarios para la Biblioteca, Tutor Virtual para GED / Virtual tutor for the Spanish GED

Voluntarios para la Biblioteca; Tutor Virtual de GED: Los Servicios de Alfabetización para Adultos de la Biblioteca del Condado de Multnomah necesitan voluntarios hispanohablantes que estén interesados en ayudar con el programa de GED en español.

 

Algunas de las responsabilidades son:

  • Brindar aprendizaje y apoyo a los adultos que desean mejorar sus habilidades de lectura, escritura y matemáticas básicas.

  • Ayudar a prepararse para el GED y trabajar con adultos para mejorar sus habilidades de lectura en español.

  • Ayudar a alumnos con aprendizaje de tecnología básica.

 

Compromiso de tiempo requerido: una sesión semanal (de 30 a 90 minutos) con un alumno adulto, por un periodo de 3 a 12 meses (también hay un horario bisemanal disponible)

 

Otros requisitos:

  • Debe tener 18 años de edad o más.

  • Debe tener diploma de escuela secundaria/preparatoria (high school) o GED.

Virtual tutor for the Spanish GED: Multnomah County Library Adult Literacy Services needs Spanish speaking volunteers who are interested in helping with the Spanish GED program.

 

Some of the responsibilities are:

  • Provide learning and support to adults who want to improve their skills in reading, writing, and basic math.

  • Help prepare for the GED and work with adults to improve their reading skills in Spanish.

  • Help students with learning basic technology.

 

Time commitment required: a weekly session (30-90 minutes) with an adult student, for 3-12 months (a schedule of every two weeks is also available)

 

Other requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must have high school diploma or GED or equivalent
