Outreach - Seniors Homes - Technology Tutor (Volunteers must be 18+)

A Technology Tutor assists patrons using word processing software, email applications, social media, and cloud-based applications. Volunteers with these skills will be able to assist with the setup and basic functions of patrons’ personal gadgets. This includes, but is not limited to, devices such as laptops*, ereaders*, tablets*, smart phones, and digital cameras 

London Public Library is trying a new program that will bring Staff and Tech Tutor volunteers into two Retirement Residences for those unable to come to the library, to support their digital literacy skills. 

  • Masonville Manor ( North London)
  • Bloom London ( South West London)

Time Commitment:  2 hours, once a month starting in June

Age requirement: 18+

Meeting dates/times: This role will take place on a Tuesday, and has a morning or afternoon schedule based on location

Tasks & responsibilities: 

  • Direct patrons to the login access and orient people to processes that already exist
  • Assist patrons on an individual basis with word processing software and email applications, or other applications 
  • Assist with basic setup and functions of patrons’ personal devices (i.e., laptops, e-readers, tablets, smartphones, digital cameras)
  • Assist with web-based applications such as Google Docs, Zoom, Microsoft 360, etc.


Skills & qualifications: 

  • Experience of interest in training others on mobile devices
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of word processing software and email applications
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of social media sites and cloud-based applications, technology peripherals (i.e. USB ports)
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse group of patrons, with a focus on the English language
  • Experience working with people of all ages and skill levels with technology
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check for 18+
