READ Program Mentor ( French Support)

Photo of a child and young woman sitting beside each other at a table and looking up and smiling. They are holding books. In the background are bookshelves.

The session runs from September to May

READ volunteers help one child (primary school age registered in at least grade 1) to discover the joy and confidence that being a reader brings. For one hour, once each week during the school year, our READ volunteers play board games, try out a new craft or experiment, tell jokes, write stories and read with their young partner.

Time Commitment: 2 hrs per week

  • 1 hour each week with a partner, plus preparation time.
  • 10-month commitment required. (October- May) training taking place in August or September
  • Sessions occur after school on weekdays and Saturdays based on volunteers' availability.

  • Motivate children to read and become Library users
  • Make children comfortable with many different materials
  • Build self-esteem in the child
  • Share our love of reading
  • Encourage parents to read to their children
