Beyond the Books ( Mentor for Teens, Volunteers must be between the age of 18-25)

Beyond the books is a virtual one-to-one mentorship between post-secondary students and high school students. Mentors assist teens in achieving their personal goals. They may be asked to help with the development of literacy skills, time management skills, and or overall confidence in figuring out the next steps of their education and life.

Time Commitment:  1 shift a week, shifts are 2 hrs in length, Commitment from  February - June.

Age requirement:  volunteers should be between the ages of 18 and 25 and attending a post-secondary school or training program

Meeting dates/times: This role has a negotiable schedule based on partner needs.

Locations:  This is a virtual volunteer role

Tasks & responsibilities: 

  • work weekly, one-on-one with a teen partner (virtually)
  • inspire a love of reading
  • create a positive relationship with a partner to build confidence in expressing oneself verbally or in writing
  • provide mentorship and guidance in literacy and communication
  • create conversation and topic plans with a partner that are interesting and helpful for goal-setting in the program
  • learn and adhere to the responsibilities outlined in the BTB orientation package
  • logging session notes each week

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check for 18+

Training & Other requirements:

  • Training will be provided at the library as needed
